New Mexico Fall Classic

New Mexico Fall Classic

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico began its 2013 season with the New Mexico Fall Classic at the UNM Championship Golf Course on Sunday, October 7. It was a beautiful fall day in New Mexico, bright sunny skies, cool temps, and very little wind. The UNM Championship Golf Course lived up to its reputation as one of the toughest courses in New Mexico. The rough was thick and long and the greens were very slick, running between 11 and 12 on the Stimpmeter.

Tour veteran and straight hitting David Baldwin of Albuquerque, started off the season with a very fine 77 to take the combined Championship/Palmer flight. Terry Freeze and Paul Dominguez could not quite catch David, both posting strong scores of 78.

Returning tour member, Ken Stopka of Rio Rancho NM, posted a very good 84 to take the very competitive combined Hogan/Sarazen Flight. Ken played a steady round and avoided big numbers on the tough golf course. Rocco Intriere and Adrian Abreu finished 2nd and 3rd with scores of 85 and 86 respectively. Both players double bogeyed the relatively short par 5 18th hole to miss out on catching Ken.

In the combined Jones/Snead Flight, 2nd year player Doug Christian of Albuquerque, continued his winning ways of the end of last season and took first place with a 93. Doug started off slow with a 49 on the front nine, but cleaned up his play on the back nine with a strong 44. Moe Torres took 2nd place with a 96. Moe started off well, but hit trouble on the tough #10 hole.

The NM TOUR will be off for the winter. The tour returns to action with the Southern New Mexico Challenge at the Sierra del Rio Golf Course tentatively on February 23, 2013.

New Mexico Tour Championship - Tournament Results

New Mexico Tour Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico completed its 2012 season with the New Mexico Tour Championship at the Isleta Eagle Golf Club in Albuquerque, NM on Saturday, August 11. It was a great day for golf and many excellent scores were posted.

In the Championship Flight, first year tour member Jason Thiele played well on the front nine and posted a very good 77 for a five shot victory.

In the tough combined Palmer/Sr Palmer Flight, tour veteran Alan Turney of Albuquerque captured his fourth win of the season with an outstanding 74, the low round of the day. Paired with the always tough Terry Freeze and Lee Goddard, who shot 37s on their front nine compared to Alan's 39, Alan blistered the back nine with an outstanding 35 to win the flight. Terry Freeze took second place with an excellent 76.

In the combined Hogan/Sr Hogan Flight, Adrian Abreu and Mark Vickers both scored excellent 77s. Adrian roared back with a excellent back nine 35 to shoot his 77, while Mark played consistently good golf to post his 77. In the sudden death playoff, Adrian stuffed his second shot to less than a foot on the tough Mesa #1 hole to take the victory.

In the Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight, Alan Truelock returned to action after missing a few tournaments to win the flight. Alan played well on both nines, posting a very steady 39,39 – 78.

In the always tough and competitive Jones/Sr Jones Flight, Douglas Christian continued to improve and posted his third win of the season with a solid 85. Isaac Padilla Jr just missed out on tying Douglas with a strong 86.

Twin Warrior Championship

Twin Warriors Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2012 season with the Twin Warrior Championship at the Twin Warriors Golf Club in Santa Ana Pueblo, NM on Saturday, July 28. Twin Warriors was in excellent shape and it was a great day for golf. The course yielded a few good scores as the players faced thick rough and tough pin locations.

In the combined Championship/Palmer/Hogan Flight, tour veteran Alan Turney of Albuquerque captured his third win of the season with an outstanding 74 and a five shot victory. Alan was even par through 16 holes, messed up on the relatively simple #17, and then parred the tough #18. His card included four birdies, four bogeys, and the lone double bogey on #17. Paul Dominguez of Albuquerque carded a fine 79 for second place. Paul was bombing his drives well over 300 yards, but he had trouble overplaying the breaks on the subtle Twin Warrior greens.

In the combined Sarazen/Jones/Snead Flight, first year tour member Douglas Christian of Rio Rancho, NM captured his second tournament in a row with an excellent 83 and a five shot victory over Jesse Hernandez. Doug keeps improving and played very steady golf. He had more than bogey on only one hole, the tough #10, proving again that the key to success is avoiding big numbers. Jesse Hernandez of Albuquerque continues to play well and took second place with a solid 88.

Paa-ko Ridge Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2012 season with the Paa-ko Ridge Championship at the Paa-ko Ridge Golf Club in Sandia Park, NM on Saturday, July 21. Paa-ko Ridge lived up to its reputation as one of the best golf courses in the country. The course was in excellent shape, and it was an excellent day for golf. The course yielded a few good scores as the players faced tight fairways and large very undulating and fast greens.

New tour member, Jason Thiele of Albuquerque, NM took first place in the Championship flight with an 83 after a slow start on the first two holes. This is Jason's second win of the season.

In the large Palmer/Sr Palmer flight, Terry (Tastee, Desert Rat, Hockey Sticks) Freeze of Albuquerque continued his excellent play this year with another 77, the low round of the tournament. Terry shot a so-so front nine 42, but then came back really strong with a superb 35 on the tough back nine. Tour vet David Baldwin of Albuquerque played steady golf and carded a fine 79 for second place. Lee Goddard of Artesia posted a solid 80 for third place.

In the Hogan/Sr Hogan flight, Rick Blose of Albuquerque captured his second win of the year with an excellent 78, the second lowest round of the tournament and a nine shot victory. Arther Telles, visiting New Mexico from Scottsdale, Arizona, took second place with an “good front nine/bad back nine” 87.

Larry Agan captured his second win of the year since being promoted to the Sr Sarazen flight with a 96 and two shot victory.

In the Jones/Sr Jones flight, new tour player Douglas Christian broke through for his first win of the year. Congratulations Doug! Doug played steady golf for the most part, and shot a 92 for a two shot victory. Doug has been steadily improving as he gets more comfortable with tournament golf.

In the Snead Flight, Eric Greenwood and John Mangan fought to a tie with 104s. Eric shot a very good 45 on the front nine but stumbled on the back nine with a 59. Eric's back nine let John come back for the tie. In the sudden death playoff, both players tied on the first playoff hole. On the second playoff hole, John made a mental mistake which led to a penalty and Eric took this third victory of the year.

Northern New Mexico Open Recap

Northern New Mexico Open

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2012 season with the inaugural Northern New Mexico Open at the Pinon Hills Golf Course in Farmington NM on Saturday, July 7. Pinon Hills lived up to its reputation as one of the best public golf courses in the country. The course was in excellent shape, and besides one brief downpour, it was an excellent day for golf. Pinon Hills yielded a few good scores as the players faced tight fairways and large very undulating greens. An exciting Jones flight finish added to the fun for the day.

Eric Anderson of Rio Rancho, NM took first place in the Championship flight with an excellent 76, the low round of the day. This is Eric's third win of the season.

Eric Anderson - Championship Flight

In the Palmer/Sr Palmer flight, Terry Freeze of Albuquerque continued his excellent play this year with a 79 and a five shot victory. Terry was one under par after twelve holes, but hit trouble on the pesky 13th par 5 that seems to give many players problems.

Terry Freeze - Palmer/Sr Palmer Flight

In the Hogan/Sr Hogan flight, Rocco Intriere captured his third win of the year with an 82 and a seven shot victory. Rocco got off to a slow start on the first two holes, but then settled down to play very good golf in the remainder of the round.

Rocco Intriere - Hogan/Sr Hogan Flight

Samuel Felix got his fourth win of the year in Sarazen flight. Again, except for a triple bogey on the tough 13th hole, the key to Sam's victory was steady par/bogey golf.

Samuel Felix - Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight

The Jones/Sr Jones flight provided the most excitement for the day. The Jones flight was by far the largest and most competitive flight in the tournament. Jesse Hernandez, Mark Madrid, and Isaac Padilla all carded fine 86s for a three-way tie. This is our first three-way tie this year. The players teed off on the first hole for the playoff and all three players hit good drives. In the end, Jesse Hernandez won the playoff with a par on the first playoff hole. Mark Madrid then took 2nd place in the scorecard playoff with Isaac Padilla. Mark keeps knocking at the door for a victory, this is his third second place finish in a row. Isaac Padilla just missed out on his third victory of the year and automatic qualification to the National Championship. Also, Douglas Christian shot 88, his best tournament round of the season.

Congratulation to Alan Turney!

Congratulation to long time NM tour member, Alan Turney, for his 2nd place finish at the Red River Shootout at the Winstar Resort in Oklahoma. Alan is taking a different approach in preparing for the 2012 Senior National Championships. Instead of playing in more familiar Golf Channel Am Tour Western Region major events such as Phoenix, Palm Springs, and Las Vegas, Alan has chosen events that will more closely replicate conditions at TPC Sawgrass, very hot, very humid, and bermuda grass. It definitely looks like he is on the right path. Way to go!

2012 Western Open - Congratulations to New Mexico Tour Players

2012 Western Open – Congratulations to New Mexico Tour Players

Fifteen New Mexico Tour Players traveled to Scottsdale, Arizona to play in the 2012 Western Open on June 9-10 at the excellent Troon North Monument and Pinnacle Golf Courses. To say the least the results were fantastic.

Terry “Tastee” Freeze has a new nickname, “Desert Rat”. Terry defended his 2011 Western Open Senior Palmer Flight win with scores of 77, 77. He led wire to wire to take a two shot victory. The win gives him automatic qualification in the Senior National Championship.

I played a practice round with Terry on the Monument Course.  This huge boulder was 260 yards out in the middle of a par 5 fairway.  Terry said he was going to aim right at the boulder.  He did and hit it right behind the boulder and was stymied.  Fortunately, he went left of the boulder in the tournament.

Darren Webb post the low round of the day in the Palmer Flight, a 75, to come out of the pack to win the tough Palmer Flight. Darren told me after Saturday's round of 80 that he was going low on Sunday and he kept his word. His scores of 80,75 gave him a two shot victory. The win gives him automatic qualification in the National Championship.

David Baldwin tied for 3rd in the Senior Palmer Flight and is also qualified for the Senior National Championship.

Southern New Mexico Challenge - 6/2/2012

Southern New Mexico Challenge

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2012 season with the inaugural Southern New Mexico Challenge at the Sierra del Rio Golf Course in Truth or Consequences NM on Saturday, June 2. New Mexico Am Tour players finally got a break from the wind and had a nice, but hot day to play. Sierra del Rio proved to be a fair and tough challenge, with unforgiving rough for shots that strayed from the narrow fairways.

Alan Turney of Albuquerque, continued to play well and posted the low round of the day with an excellent 77 to win the Palmer/Sr Palmer flight by four strokes. Terry Freeze and Gordon Rahn of Albuquerque both posted solid 81s to tie for second. Terry captured the 2nd place payout via a scorecard playoff.

Adrian Abreu of Las Vegas, NM captured his first victory of the year in the Hogan/Sr Hogan flight. Adrian posted an very good 84 and took a eight shot victory in the flight over 2nd place finisher Rocco Intriere. As is normal for playing tight courses with penalizing rough, the key to Adrian's victory was avoiding disastrous hole(s) that plagued so many players.

In the combined Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight, tour veterans Phil Vallo of Rio Rancho and Ralph Anderson Jr tied for 1st place with 96s. Ralph took the victory in the playoff for his first victory of the year.

In the combined Jones/Sr Jones Flight, first year AM Tour player, Isaac Padilla Jr from Flora Vista NM, also captured his first victory of the year with a solid 95 and a two shot victory over tour veteran Mark Madrid.

First year AM Tour player, John Mangan of Albuquerque, posted his 2nd win in a row with a 6 shot victory in the combined Snead/Sr Snead flight.
