Cochiti Championship - 2013

Cochiti Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2013 season with the Cochiti Championship at the Pueblo de Cochiti Golf Club south of Santa Fe, NM on Saturday, June 29. Sunny skies, warm temperatures, and light winds for most of the day made for a beautiful day for golf. The tight course was in excellent shape and if you were able to keep your ball in play and kept your ball below the hole on the fast greens, a good score was out there, as several outstanding scores were posted.

In the combined Championship/Palmer flight, Emerson Vallo of Pueblo de Acoma, NM, shot the best round of the day for his first victory of the year. Emerson avoided any big scores on the tight course in route to his 38,37 – 75. Lee Goddard came close to a victory again with an excellent 76. Lee got a little too aggressive on the short, very tight last hole and took a double bogey to just miss out. Terry Freeze and Gordon Rahn continue to play well and tied for third with very good rounds of 78. Terry won the third place prize with his very good back nine 37.

In the combined Hogan/Sr Hogan Flight, Alan Truelock of Albuquerque also posted his first victory of the year and his first victory as a Hogan Flight player. Alan edged out Rick Blose of Albuquerque, with his 82 to Rick's 83. Rick made a charge on the back nine with three birdies, but couldn't quite catch Alan.

Normally, the Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight is one of our most competitive flight. However, not today, as Lance Lackas of Los Alamos posted an outstanding round of 77 to take a four shot victory and his 2nd win of the year. His round consisted of three birdies and no double bogeys. Shooting a very good round of 81, Phil Vallo of Rio Rancho took 2nd place. First year tour member, James Jefferies posted a solid 84 to take 3rd place.

In the combined Jones/Snead Flight, Mark Madrid of Rio Rancho, NM, posted an 88 to edge out Stephen Inoue and Douglas Christian by a single stroke to capture his 3rd victory of the year. With his third victory of the year, Mark has now qualified for the National Championship. Douglas won the 2nd place prize via scorecard playoff.

Thanks to all of the NM Am Tour players for playing in the Cochiti Championship.

Note: The TOUR returns to action with the Northern New Mexico Open at Pinon Hills on July 13. Please contact me by email or phone before the registration deadline of July 7, if you want to pay by cash or check for this tournament.

Burrell and Rountree Take 3rd Place at the Western Invitational

Burrell and Rountree Take 3rd Place at the Western Invitational

Congratulations again to Brett Burrell for taking 3rd place in the Senior Sarazen Flight at the Western Invitational on June 22-23. The tournament was played on the beautiful Sandpiper Golf club in Santa Barbara CA. Brett was in 5th place after the first round in the large Sr Sarazen Flight (30 players) with a steady 85. He improved with another steady 83 in the second round to move up to a tie for 3rd place. Brett has had an impressive season in the majors this year with three top 5 finishes. Brett has already qualified for the Sr National Championship and with his results on our local NM tour and in the majors, he is definitely a contender for the Sr Sarazen Flight national title.

Also, congratulations to ME! I managed to scrape it around the course for two days shooting very steady golf (78, 79). I had only two birdies and 1 double bogey over the two days. So lots of pars and bogeys. My kind of golf. I tied for 3rd in the Sr Palmer Flight, so now I'm qualified to go to the Sr National Championship when I play my 5th tournament round next month at the Pacific Northwest Major Championship.

Twin Warrior Championship 2013 - Tournament Results

Twin Warriors Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2013 season with the Twin Warriors Championship at the Twin Warriors Golf Course in Albuquerque NM on Sunday, June 16. Sunny skies, warm temperatures, and light winds for most of the day made for a beautiful day for golf. However, the course played very tough with only one player breaking 80.

Tour veterans, Alan Turney of Albuquerque and Gregory Allen of Pagosa Springs CO fought to a tie in the Championship Flight. Both posted rounds of 81 on the tight course. Alan captured his third tour victory of the year on the first playoff hole with a par. With his third victory of the year, Alan has now qualified for the Sr National Championship. This was Gregory's second playoff loss in a row.

In the combined Palmer/Sr Palmer Flight, Gordon Rahn of Albuquerque posted an excellent 77 (42,35) to capture his first win of the year. Gordon was the only player to break 80 on the tough course. His fantastic back-nine 35 included 3 birdies and a double bogey. Terry Freeze and Lee Goddard both shot solid rounds of 80. Terry won the second place prize via scorecard playoff with his strong back-nine 38.

In the combined Hogan/Sr Hogan Flight, Rick Blose of Albuquerque, captured his third win of the year with a solid round of 83. With his third victory, Rick has also qualified for the Sr National Championship. Right behind Rick was Ken Stopka of Rio Rancho NM with an 84.

In the always competitive combined Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight, visitor Tim Coplen of Lake Havasu City, AZ took 1st place with a strong 82. Tim continued to play well after his win in last week's major, the Western Open in Scottsdale, AZ. Returning to the tour after an injury, Steve Damron posted a solid round of 83 to take 2nd place. Ralph Anderson Jr captured third place with a round of 85.

In the combined Jones/Sr Jones Flight, Isaac Padilla Jr of Flora Vista, NM captured his first win of the year with an excellent 83. Three shots back with 86, was Douglas Christian of Albuquerque.

In the Snead Flight, second year tour player Eric Greenwood of Albuquerque continues to improve and captured his third win in a row and his third win of the year with a 92 and a seven shot victory. Eric has also now qualified for the National Championship.
