2013 National Championship Recap

2013 National Championship Recap

We had 8 NM players go to the 2013 National Championship and 8 NM go to the 2013 Sr National Championship. I think everyone had a good time, I know I did. David Feherty and Kelly Tilghman hosted the dinner at the National Championship and Roger Maltbie and Terry Gannon hosted the Sr National Championship dinner. Both sessions were very entertaining. Winn McMurray was present for both weeks doing player interviews, signing autographs, chatting with players and wives, and just being very friendly the whole time. The 4 courses were playing tough, firm, and fast, as they should be for a national championship.

Congratulations to Doug Christian and Jeff Brown for finishing in the money in the Jones Flight. Doug played steady golf and finished T8. Jeff started off slow but finish T12.

Also, Joseph Perez finished in the money in the Senior Sarazen Flight with a T29.

The rest of us didn't fare so well. We'll get them next year!

Below are some pictures from the dinners. (Sorry about the quality of the photos)

Due to his improved play late last season and at Nationals, Jeff Brown has been promoted to the Sarazen Flight. With the promotion, he is the first NM tour player to qualify for the 2014 National Championship.

2014 NM Tour Schedule

I am currently working on the remainder of our 2014 schedule. I've been contacting courses to get on their calendars. I hope to have our schedule complete and on the www.gcamtour.com/albuquerque website by the end of November. Now is the time to recruit your golf buddies. Also, remember that women and children can become members and play.

If you have any questions, please contact me and thanks again for a great 2013 season!

New Mexico Fall Classic - 2013

New Mexico Fall Classic

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico began its 2014 season with the New Mexico Fall Classic at the UNM Championship Golf Course on Saturday, October 12. It was a beautiful fall day in New Mexico, bright sunny skies, cool temps, and very little wind. The UNM Championship Golf Course lived up to its reputation as one of the toughest courses in New Mexico. The rough was thick and long and the greens were very slick, running between 11 and 12 on the Stimpmeter.

In the Championship/Sr Championship Flight, Alan Turney of Albuquerque and Mark Garard of Farmington, both shot 76, excellent scores on the tough course. The sudden death playoff went 6 holes. Both players bogeyed #10, parred #11, 12, and 13, and birdied #14. Then Alan parred #15 and took the title when Mark failed to get up and down.

Alan Truelock of Albuquerque continues to play well and won the Hogan/Sr Hogan Flight with an 87. First year player Aubrey Johnson of Albuquerque just missed out on capturing his first title when he took an 8 on the short par 5 final hole.

In the Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight, Ron May of Albuquerque captured his first title with a solid 86. Ron birdied the final hole to take a one shot victory over Joseph Perez of Albuquerque.

In the Jones/Sr Jones Flight, Douglas Christian of Albuquerque defended his title. Douglas shot a 91 and took a 6 shot victory over Raymond Lopez of Rio Rancho NM.

The NM TOUR will be off for the winter. Tentatively, the tour will return to action in March.

New Mexico Am Tour Players Win Two Titles at the Western Classic

Blose and Brown Capture 1st Place at the Western Classic

Congratulations to Rick Blose for winning the Senior Hogan Flight at the Golf Channel Am Tour Western Classic on August 4-5. The tournament was played on the beautiful Paiute Golf Club, Wolf and Sun Mountain courses just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. Rick was in the middle of the Senior Hogan pack after an average round of 86 on the Wolf Course but came from 9 shots behind with an excellent 78 on the Sun Mountain Course to tie for the lead. Rick then played a superb drive and second shot on the first playoff hole and made the birdie to capture his first Golf Channel Am Tour major tournament victory. Rick had already qualified for the Senior National Championship at PGA West in September by way of his solid play this year on the New Mexico Tour, but this victory certainly gives him momentum for the Senior Nationals.

Also, congratulations to 2nd year Am Tour player Jeff Brown for winning the Jones Flight. Jeff played steady and good golf for two days. His first round 84 on the Wolf Course had him tied for 2nd and another very good round of 85 on the Sun Mountain Course gave him a one shot victory. This is Jeff's first win on the Golf Channel Am Tour. With the win, Jeff is now qualified for the National Championship at PGA West in September.

Also playing well, Darren Webb came in third place in the tough Palmer Flight. Darren posted rounds of 78, 80. With his third place finish, Darren has also qualified for the National Championship.

Paako Ridge Championship - 2013

Paa-ko Ridge Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2013 season with the Paa-ko Ridge Championship at the Paa-ko Ridge Golf Course in Sandia Park, NM on Sunday, July 28. Partly cloudy skies, mild temperatures, and light winds for most of the day made for a beautiful day for golf. The highly regarded Ken Dye course was in excellent shape. Some excellent rounds were posted on this tough championship course that requires accurate tee and approach shots and a deft touch on the very tough and fast multi-tiered rolling greens.

In the Championship Flight, Alan Turney of Albuquerque took a five shot victory with the best round of the day, an outstanding 74 (38,36). Alan's round included two birdies and no double bogeys.

The combined Palmer/Sr Palmer flight, was won by Darren Webb of Albuquerque NM with an excellent round of 75 (36, 39 ). Darren's round included 4 birdies and 2 double bogeys. This is Darren's 2nd victory of the year. Paul Dominguez of Albuquerque, also posted a very strong 78 for 2nd place. Robert Bauder of Sandia Park, NM rounded out the top three in the strong Palmer/Sr Palmer Flight with a very good 79.

In the combined Hogan/Sr Hogan Flight, Ken Stopka of Albuquerque continued to dominate the flight. His round had the potential to be the best ever recorded on the NM Tour. Playing from the same tees as the Championship and Palmer Flights, Ken birdied 4 holes on the front nine in route to a 33 (-3). He double bogeyed #10 but got back to 3-under with birdies on #12 and #13. Unfortunately, trouble caught him and Ken struggled coming in, going 7-over on the last 4 holes for a 43. Still an outstanding round of 76.

In the combined Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight, Ralph Anderson Jr of White Sands, NM , posted a solid round of 89 to take a 5 shot victory and his first victory of the year. Ralph struggled some on the front nine with a 48 but came back with a very good 41 on the back nine.

In the combined Jones/Sr Jones Flight, Isaac Padilla of Flora Vista NM, captured his 2nd win in a row and his third of the season by a single stroke over Douglas Christian. Both players struggled on the front nine, especially on the the very short par 3 #4 and the par 5 #5. Isaac had a two shot lead going into the back nine and almost let Douglas catch him when he stumbled on the last hole with a quad-bogey.

In the Snead Flight, Eric Greenwood of Albuquerque, posted another victory with a very up and down round of 97.

Thanks to all of the NM Am Tour players and visitors for playing in the Paa-ko Ridge Championship.

Cochiti Championship - 2013

Cochiti Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2013 season with the Cochiti Championship at the Pueblo de Cochiti Golf Club south of Santa Fe, NM on Saturday, June 29. Sunny skies, warm temperatures, and light winds for most of the day made for a beautiful day for golf. The tight course was in excellent shape and if you were able to keep your ball in play and kept your ball below the hole on the fast greens, a good score was out there, as several outstanding scores were posted.

In the combined Championship/Palmer flight, Emerson Vallo of Pueblo de Acoma, NM, shot the best round of the day for his first victory of the year. Emerson avoided any big scores on the tight course in route to his 38,37 – 75. Lee Goddard came close to a victory again with an excellent 76. Lee got a little too aggressive on the short, very tight last hole and took a double bogey to just miss out. Terry Freeze and Gordon Rahn continue to play well and tied for third with very good rounds of 78. Terry won the third place prize with his very good back nine 37.

In the combined Hogan/Sr Hogan Flight, Alan Truelock of Albuquerque also posted his first victory of the year and his first victory as a Hogan Flight player. Alan edged out Rick Blose of Albuquerque, with his 82 to Rick's 83. Rick made a charge on the back nine with three birdies, but couldn't quite catch Alan.

Normally, the Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight is one of our most competitive flight. However, not today, as Lance Lackas of Los Alamos posted an outstanding round of 77 to take a four shot victory and his 2nd win of the year. His round consisted of three birdies and no double bogeys. Shooting a very good round of 81, Phil Vallo of Rio Rancho took 2nd place. First year tour member, James Jefferies posted a solid 84 to take 3rd place.

In the combined Jones/Snead Flight, Mark Madrid of Rio Rancho, NM, posted an 88 to edge out Stephen Inoue and Douglas Christian by a single stroke to capture his 3rd victory of the year. With his third victory of the year, Mark has now qualified for the National Championship. Douglas won the 2nd place prize via scorecard playoff.

Burrell and Rountree Take 3rd Place at the Western Invitational

Burrell and Rountree Take 3rd Place at the Western Invitational

Congratulations again to Brett Burrell for taking 3rd place in the Senior Sarazen Flight at the Western Invitational on June 22-23. The tournament was played on the beautiful Sandpiper Golf club in Santa Barbara CA. Brett was in 5th place after the first round in the large Sr Sarazen Flight (30 players) with a steady 85. He improved with another steady 83 in the second round to move up to a tie for 3rd place. Brett has had an impressive season in the majors this year with three top 5 finishes. Brett has already qualified for the Sr National Championship and with his results on our local NM tour and in the majors, he is definitely a contender for the Sr Sarazen Flight national title.

Also, congratulations to ME! I managed to scrape it around the course for two days shooting very steady golf (78, 79). I had only two birdies and 1 double bogey over the two days. So lots of pars and bogeys. My kind of golf. I tied for 3rd in the Sr Palmer Flight, so now I'm qualified to go to the Sr National Championship when I play my 5th tournament round next month at the Pacific Northwest Major Championship.

Twin Warrior Championship 2013 - Tournament Results

Twin Warriors Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2013 season with the Twin Warriors Championship at the Twin Warriors Golf Course in Albuquerque NM on Sunday, June 16. Sunny skies, warm temperatures, and light winds for most of the day made for a beautiful day for golf. However, the course played very tough with only one player breaking 80.

Tour veterans, Alan Turney of Albuquerque and Gregory Allen of Pagosa Springs CO fought to a tie in the Championship Flight. Both posted rounds of 81 on the tight course. Alan captured his third tour victory of the year on the first playoff hole with a par. With his third victory of the year, Alan has now qualified for the Sr National Championship. This was Gregory's second playoff loss in a row.

In the combined Palmer/Sr Palmer Flight, Gordon Rahn of Albuquerque posted an excellent 77 (42,35) to capture his first win of the year. Gordon was the only player to break 80 on the tough course. His fantastic back-nine 35 included 3 birdies and a double bogey. Terry Freeze and Lee Goddard both shot solid rounds of 80. Terry won the second place prize via scorecard playoff with his strong back-nine 38.

In the combined Hogan/Sr Hogan Flight, Rick Blose of Albuquerque, captured his third win of the year with a solid round of 83. With his third victory, Rick has also qualified for the Sr National Championship. Right behind Rick was Ken Stopka of Rio Rancho NM with an 84.

In the always competitive combined Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight, visitor Tim Coplen of Lake Havasu City, AZ took 1st place with a strong 82. Tim continued to play well after his win in last week's major, the Western Open in Scottsdale, AZ. Returning to the tour after an injury, Steve Damron posted a solid round of 83 to take 2nd place. Ralph Anderson Jr captured third place with a round of 85.

In the combined Jones/Sr Jones Flight, Isaac Padilla Jr of Flora Vista, NM captured his first win of the year with an excellent 83. Three shots back with 86, was Douglas Christian of Albuquerque.

In the Snead Flight, second year tour player Eric Greenwood of Albuquerque continues to improve and captured his third win in a row and his third win of the year with a 92 and a seven shot victory. Eric has also now qualified for the National Championship.

Thanks to all of the NM Am Tour players and visitors for playing in the Twin Warriors Championship.

Note: The TOUR returns to action with the Cochiti Championship on June 29. Please contact me by email or phone before the registration deadline of June 23, if you want to pay by cash or check for this tournament.
