Arroyo del Oso Championship - 2014

Arroyo del Oso Championship - 2014

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2014 season with the Arroyo del Oso Championship at the Arroyo del Oso Golf Course in Albuquerque, NM on Saturday, May 24.  New Mexico Am Tour players again faced tough weather conditions.  Although the day started off with good weather, it didn’t take long for the thunderstorms to kick in.  The thunderstorms brought in steady rains, gusty winds, and very cool conditions.  Fortunately, there were no lightning delays and everyone was able to finish, albeit wet and cold.
Gregory Allen of Pagosa Springs,  CO captured the Championship Flight and his second victory of the season with a one shot victory over Willliam (Bo) Galbreth.  He shot the best round of the tournament, a solid 80 in the tough conditions. Galbreth seemed to have the victory in hand but took an 8 on the 17th hole.

In the combined Palmer Flight, tour vet Terry Freeze of Albuquerque captured his first win of the year with a solid round of 81.  Adian Abreu shot 83 to take second place.

The Sr Hogan flight was won by tour vet Rick Blose of Albuquerque.  This was also Rick’s second win of the year.  Rick started off with a strong front nine and held of Brett Burrell and Dave Pritts to take a one shot victory with an 84.  Dave Pritts took home the second place prize via scorecard playoff.

In the very competitive combined Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight, James Jefferies of  Albuquerque captured his first win on the Am Tour with a very good 84. Congratulations James!  Joseph Perez continues to play well in the Sarazen Flight and took second place.

In the combined Jones/Sr Jones Flight,  Doug Christian of Albuquerque continues to play well and captured his forth victory of the 2014 season. Doug started off very well and held on to take a 3 shot victory over Stephen Inoue.

Thanks to all of the NM Am Tour players and visitors for playing in the Arroyo del Oso Championship.
Note:  The TOUR returns to action with the Cochiti Championship on May 31 and the Isleta Eagle Championship on June 14.  Please contact me by email or phone before the registration deadlines of May 25 and June 8 respectively for these events if you want to pay by cash or check.

New Mexico Tour News - May 2014

Registration Reminders:

The deadline for registration for the Arroyo del Oso Championship is next Sunday May 18 at 11:59 PM EST.

The deadline for registration for the Cochiti Championship is Sunday May 25 at 11:59 PM EST.

If you wish to pay with cash or by check, please contact me before the registration deadline.

National Championships Qualifying and Registration:

As always, there is some confusion about  qualifying and registering for National Championships.

Tour Players are encouraged to register online as early as possible (even if you are not qualified and/or eligible at the date of original sign-up).  Do not wait until the last minute to register for Nationals.  With players traveling from all across the country, it is important to sign up well in advance of the registration deadline even if you are not qualified or eligible at that time.  Tour Players who are both qualified and eligible will be accepted based on a
combination of original sign-up date with priority given to how players qualify for the National Championship based on the posted order of priority.

Please note that the entry fee will not be charged until you are officially accepted into the National Championship and there is no fee to apply to play.  If you do not qualify and/or do not meet eligibility requirements, you will not be charged the entry fee nor any cancellation fees. If you apply and then determine that you cannot play, you are encouraged to cancel your application ASAP so that you are not approved.  Once you are approved into the National Championship, the entry fee will be charged and if you elect to withdraw then you will be charged the posted cancellation fee.

Important Dates:

May 1, 2014 - The start date for players applying to compete at the 2014 National Championships

June 2, 2014 - The earliest date that a player may be approved to compete based on the posted eligibility requirements.

August 19, 2014 - Registration Deadline (players are strongly encouraged to apply prior to registration deadline)

National Championship Qualifying:

In order to be accepted and compete in the National Championships, a player must be both “Eligible” and “Qualified”:

Eligibility:

A Tour Player becomes eligible for the National Championships by completing five (5) tournaments on the Am Tour with the following condition:

One (1) of the tournaments must come on/after June 1, 2014.  A tournament is considered a posted 18-hole or 36-hole tournament score

Qualified Players:

The following is how players can qualify for the 2014 National Championships in order of priority:

1) Past National Champions
2) Top 5 and ties from 2013 National Championships
3) Top 3 and ties from a 2014 Major Championship
4) Any 3-time local tournament winner from the 2014 season (non-major)
5) Any player who earns a GolfNow Performance Promotion during the 2014 season and remains in the promoted flight
6) Top three per flight, not exempt in another category, from the 2014 Order of Merit
7) Top finisher per flight, not exempt in another category, from the “Summer Series”
8) Top finisher per flight, not exempt in another category, from the local (home) Tour Championship
9) Top 25% of each flight per Tour

Qualifiers for the Senior and National Championship must be a member in good standing with Am Tour. A position in the field is not guaranteed and is limited to the first 600 per Championship.

Summer Series:

The New Mexico Tour Summer Series begins on June 1.  The Summer Series provides an additional way to qualify for Nationals.  It is designed for new players or players who were not able to compete very much earlier in our 2014 season or for those of you who just did not play well thus far  (you know who you are ;) ).  Order of Merit points that you get in any tournament after June 1, goes both to your season long total and to your Summer Series total.  As mentioned above, the top finisher in each flight for the Summer Series, not exempt in another category, qualifies for the National Championship.

Major Championships:

All Major Championships for the remainder of the 2014 season are now sold-out with the exception of the Western Classic at Paiute in early August (there are only a handful of spots remaining).

As always, if you have any questions about the Am Tour, please feel free to contact me.
