Santa Ana Open - 2014

Santa Ana Open - 2014

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2014 season with the Santa Ana Open at the Santa Ana Golf Club in Santa Ana Pueblo,  NM on Sunday, April 13.  The day started off nice, clear, warm and light breezes but by the back nine, New Mexico spring winds were howling again.  Many players posted good front nines only to see their good rounds disappear in the dusty and gusty conditions.  Holes 17 and 18 played into strong winds and proved to be the toughest test of the day.
William Galbreth of Albuquerque captured the Championship Flight and his second victory of the season.  He shot the best round of the tournament, an excellent 77.
In the combined Palmer/Sr Palmer Flight, Darren Webb of Albuquerque captured his first win of the year with a solid round of 81.  Darren had an excellent front nine 37 and held on to take the win.

The combined Hogan/Sr Hogan flight was won by tour vet Brett Burrell of Albuquerque.  This was also Brett’s first win of the year.  Brett shot a very steady round of 85 and played well on the back nine.  Aubrey Johnson continues to play well in the Hogan Flight with an 86 and finished in second place.  Aubrey started off very strong with a 38 on the front nine but struggled on the back nine.

In the very competitive combined Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight, John Rocca of  Albuquerque captured his first win of the season with a solid 85. John also started off very strong with a front nine 39 and held on for a two shot victory over Ron May.

In the combined Jones/Sr Jones Flight,  Doug Christian of Albuquerque continues to play well and captured his third victory of the 2014 season.  Doug started off very slow with a 49 on the front but was one of the few players that played well in the wind on the back nine finishing with a excellent 40.  With his third victory, Doug will qualify for the 2014 National Championship once he meets the eligibility requirements.  Angelo Faux of Castle Rock, CO finished 2nd with a 92, a very good round given the conditions and being unfamiliar with the course. One more stroke back at 93, Stephen Inoue of Santa Fe took 3rd place.
In the combined Snead/Sr Snead Flight, James Easley of Albuquerque captured his 2nd victory in a row.   James also started off the front nine very steady (44) and ended up with a solid round of 97 in the tough conditions.

Thanks to all of the NM Am Tour players and visitors for playing in the Santa Ana Open.
