New Mexico Tour Championship - 2013

New Mexico Tour Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico completed its 2013 season with the New Mexico Tour Championship at the Santa Ana Golf Club in Santa Ana Pueblo, NM on August 24 - 25. One Day 1, players competed on the Tamaya/Cheena nines and on Day 2 they played the Cheena/Star nines. Players had to contend with gusty winds and some downpours from a few passing thunderstorms but otherwise conditions were good and some outstanding scores were posted.

In the Championship Flight, Gregory Allen of Pagosa Springs, CO took a 6 shot victory with very solid rounds of 77,79. This is the first victory on tour for Greg.

The combined Palmer/Sr Palmer flight was won by Paul Dominguez of Albuquerque NM with an excellent rounds of 75, 73. Darren Webb of Albuquerque had the first round lead with another excellent 73 and even though he had an excellent second round 76, Paul was able to pass him. Lee Goddard of Artesia, NM also played well (82,78) and took 3rd place.

In the combined Hogan/Sr Hogan Flight, Alan Truelock of Albuquerque played the steadiest golf (84,81) and captured his 2nd victory of the year. Ken Stopka of Albuquerque took 2nd place with rounds of 86,80. Ken just failed to catch Alan when he doubled the short par 5 #18.

In the combined Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight, Brett Burrell of Albuquerqe continued to play extremely well this season, posting very good rounds of 81,81 to take a 6 shot victory. Jesus Duran of Las Cruces matched Brett's first round 81 but dropped to 2nd place with his 2nd round 87. Phil Vallo of Rio Rancho and James Jefferies of Albuquerque tied for 3rd. Phil took the 3rd place prize via scorecard playoff with his excellent final nine 39.

In the combined Jones/Sr Jones Flight, Jeff Brown of Taos, NM continued his excellent late season play and posted his third win in a row with rounds of 88,90. Doug Christian of Albuquerque came up a stroke short with rounds of 93, 86. Stephen Inoue of Santa Fe and Isaac Padilla of Flora Vista, NM, tied for third place, each player posting one good round and one not so good round. Stephen took the 3rd place prize via scorecard playoff.

In the Snead Flight, John Mangan of Rio Rancho, NM, dominated the flight on his home course with very nice rounds of 91,90.

Taos Championship - 2013

Taos Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2013 season with the Taos Championship at the Taos Country Club in Taos, NM on Saturday, August. Partly cloudy skies, mild temperatures, and light winds for most of the day made for a beautiful day for golf. The links-style course was in excellent shape and some excellent rounds were posted.

In the combined Championship/Palmer Flight, Lee Goddard of Artesia, NM captured his second win of the year with a 3 shot victory and shot the best round of the day, an outstanding 77 (40,37). Alan Turney of Albuquerque and Emerson Vallo of Pueblo de Acoma, NM both posted rounds of 80 to tie for 2nd. Alan took the 2nd place prize via scorecard playoff with his strong back-nine 38.

John Rocca and Ralph Anderson Jr. both posted excellent rounds of 82 in the combined Hogan/Sarazen Flight. First year tour player, John Rocca of Albuquerque, won on the first playoff hole with a par after Ralph three putted when he was too aggressive with his first putt. This is John's first victory of the year.

In the combined Jones/Snead Flight, local Taos player, Jeff Brown, continued his strong play after winning the Western Classic major in Las Vegas last week. Jeff posted a personal best at the Taos CC, an outstanding 82. Isaac Padilla of Flora Vista, NM continued to play well and took 2nd place with a solid 87.

Thanks to all of the NM Am Tour players for playing in the Taos Championship.

Note: The TOUR completes the 2013 season with the New Mexico Tour Championship on Saturday/Sunday, August 24-25. Please contact me by email or phone before the registration deadline of August 18, if you want to pay by cash or check for this tournament.

New Mexico Am Tour Players Win Two Titles at the Western Classic

Blose and Brown Capture 1st Place at the Western Classic

Congratulations to Rick Blose for winning the Senior Hogan Flight at the Golf Channel Am Tour Western Classic on August 4-5. The tournament was played on the beautiful Paiute Golf Club, Wolf and Sun Mountain courses just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. Rick was in the middle of the Senior Hogan pack after an average round of 86 on the Wolf Course but came from 9 shots behind with an excellent 78 on the Sun Mountain Course to tie for the lead. Rick then played a superb drive and second shot on the first playoff hole and made the birdie to capture his first Golf Channel Am Tour major tournament victory. Rick had already qualified for the Senior National Championship at PGA West in September by way of his solid play this year on the New Mexico Tour, but this victory certainly gives him momentum for the Senior Nationals.

Also, congratulations to 2nd year Am Tour player Jeff Brown for winning the Jones Flight. Jeff played steady and good golf for two days. His first round 84 on the Wolf Course had him tied for 2nd and another very good round of 85 on the Sun Mountain Course gave him a one shot victory. This is Jeff's first win on the Golf Channel Am Tour. With the win, Jeff is now qualified for the National Championship at PGA West in September.

Also playing well, Darren Webb came in third place in the tough Palmer Flight. Darren posted rounds of 78, 80. With his third place finish, Darren has also qualified for the National Championship.
