Twin Warrior Championship

Twin Warriors Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2012 season with the Twin Warrior Championship at the Twin Warriors Golf Club in Santa Ana Pueblo, NM on Saturday, July 28. Twin Warriors was in excellent shape and it was a great day for golf. The course yielded a few good scores as the players faced thick rough and tough pin locations.

In the combined Championship/Palmer/Hogan Flight, tour veteran Alan Turney of Albuquerque captured his third win of the season with an outstanding 74 and a five shot victory. Alan was even par through 16 holes, messed up on the relatively simple #17, and then parred the tough #18. His card included four birdies, four bogeys, and the lone double bogey on #17. Paul Dominguez of Albuquerque carded a fine 79 for second place. Paul was bombing his drives well over 300 yards, but he had trouble overplaying the breaks on the subtle Twin Warrior greens.

In the combined Sarazen/Jones/Snead Flight, first year tour member Douglas Christian of Rio Rancho, NM captured his second tournament in a row with an excellent 83 and a five shot victory over Jesse Hernandez. Doug keeps improving and played very steady golf. He had more than bogey on only one hole, the tough #10, proving again that the key to success is avoiding big numbers. Jesse Hernandez of Albuquerque continues to play well and took second place with a solid 88.

Note: The TOUR completes its 2012 season with the New Mexico Tour Championship on August 11 at the Isleta Eagle Golf Course. Please contact me by email or phone if you want to pay by cash or check.

Paa-ko Ridge Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2012 season with the Paa-ko Ridge Championship at the Paa-ko Ridge Golf Club in Sandia Park, NM on Saturday, July 21. Paa-ko Ridge lived up to its reputation as one of the best golf courses in the country. The course was in excellent shape, and it was an excellent day for golf. The course yielded a few good scores as the players faced tight fairways and large very undulating and fast greens.

New tour member, Jason Thiele of Albuquerque, NM took first place in the Championship flight with an 83 after a slow start on the first two holes. This is Jason's second win of the season.

In the large Palmer/Sr Palmer flight, Terry (Tastee, Desert Rat, Hockey Sticks) Freeze of Albuquerque continued his excellent play this year with another 77, the low round of the tournament. Terry shot a so-so front nine 42, but then came back really strong with a superb 35 on the tough back nine. Tour vet David Baldwin of Albuquerque played steady golf and carded a fine 79 for second place. Lee Goddard of Artesia posted a solid 80 for third place.

In the Hogan/Sr Hogan flight, Rick Blose of Albuquerque captured his second win of the year with an excellent 78, the second lowest round of the tournament and a nine shot victory. Arther Telles, visiting New Mexico from Scottsdale, Arizona, took second place with an “good front nine/bad back nine” 87.

Larry Agan captured his second win of the year since being promoted to the Sr Sarazen flight with a 96 and two shot victory.

In the Jones/Sr Jones flight, new tour player Douglas Christian broke through for his first win of the year. Congratulations Doug! Doug played steady golf for the most part, and shot a 92 for a two shot victory. Doug has been steadily improving as he gets more comfortable with tournament golf.

In the Snead Flight, Eric Greenwood and John Mangan fought to a tie with 104s. Eric shot a very good 45 on the front nine but stumbled on the back nine with a 59. Eric's back nine let John come back for the tie. In the sudden death playoff, both players tied on the first playoff hole. On the second playoff hole, John made a mental mistake which led to a penalty and Eric took this third victory of the year.

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2012 season with the inaugural Northern New Mexico Open at the Pinon Hills Golf Course in Farmington NM on Saturday, July 7. Pinon Hills lived up to its reputation as one of the best public golf courses in the country. The course was in excellent shape, and besides one brief downpour, it was an excellent day for golf. Pinon Hills yielded a few good scores as the players faced tight fairways and large very undulating greens. An exciting Jones flight finish added to the fun for the day.

Eric Anderson of Rio Rancho, NM took first place in the Championship flight with an excellent 76, the low round of the day. This is Eric's third win of the season.

Eric Anderson - Championship Flight

In the Palmer/Sr Palmer flight, Terry Freeze of Albuquerque continued his excellent play this year with a 79 and a five shot victory. Terry was one under par after twelve holes, but hit trouble on the pesky 13th par 5 that seems to give many players problems.

Terry Freeze - Palmer/Sr Palmer Flight

In the Hogan/Sr Hogan flight, Rocco Intriere captured his third win of the year with an 82 and a seven shot victory. Rocco got off to a slow start on the first two holes, but then settled down to play very good golf in the remainder of the round.

Rocco Intriere - Hogan/Sr Hogan Flight

Samuel Felix got his fourth win of the year in Sarazen flight. Again, except for a triple bogey on the tough 13th hole, the key to Sam's victory was steady par/bogey golf.

Samuel Felix - Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight

The Jones/Sr Jones flight provided the most excitement for the day. The Jones flight was by far the largest and most competitive flight in the tournament. Jesse Hernandez, Mark Madrid, and Isaac Padilla all carded fine 86s for a three-way tie. This is our first three-way tie this year. The players teed off on the first hole for the playoff and all three players hit good drives. In the end, Jesse Hernandez won the playoff with a par on the first playoff hole. Mark Madrid then took 2nd place in the scorecard playoff with Isaac Padilla. Mark keeps knocking at the door for a victory, this is his third second place finish in a row. Isaac Padilla just missed out on his third victory of the year and automatic qualification to the National Championship. Also, Douglas Christian shot 88, his best tournament round of the season.

Congratulation to Alan Turney!

Congratulation to long time NM tour member, Alan Turney, for his 2nd place finish at the Red River Shootout at the Winstar Resort in Oklahoma. Alan is taking a different approach in preparing for the 2012 Senior National Championships. Instead of playing in more familiar Golf Channel Am Tour Western Region major events such as Phoenix, Palm Springs, and Las Vegas, Alan has chosen events that will more closely replicate conditions at TPC Sawgrass, very hot, very humid, and bermuda grass. It definitely looks like he is on the right path. Way to go!
