Red Hawk Open - 2014

Red Hawk Open

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2014 season with the Red Hawk Open at the Red Hawk Golf Club in Las Cruces  NM on Sunday, March 30.  Red Hawk proved to be one of the toughest tests of golf that New Mexico Tour players have faced.  The weather was cool and breezy.  However, the weather was not the main factor in the scoring.  The tough Ken Dye design features 76 strategically located bunkers, water on at least 6 holes that was definitely in play, and Ken Dye’s typical tough, multi-sloped greens.
Alan Turney of Albuquerque captured his first victory of the season despite taking a quad-bogey on the last hole.  He tied Gregory Allen of Pagosa Springs, CO with an 86.  Alan took the win with a par on the first playoff hole.

In the combined Palmer/Sr Palmer Flight, Richard Harvey of Hobbs NM returned to New Mexico after spending a year in Texas and captured his first win on the New Mexico Tour.  Richard also posted an 86 to take a two shot victory over David Baldwin.  David started off steady, but had a very untypical David Baldwin back nine.

The combined Hogan/Sr Hogan flight was won by tour vet Alan Truelock.  Alan took a 4 shot victory over Jack Anderson with a 91.  Both Alan and Jack struggled on the tough front nine with 48, while Alan was able to play a little better on the back nine.

In the combined Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight, Joseph Perez of  Albuquerque, captured his first win of the season with an 87. His score was good enough for a one shot victory over Phil Aragon.

In the combined Jones/Sr Jones Flight,  Eric Greenwood of Albuquerque continues to improve and captured his first victory since being promoted to the Jones Flight late last year.  Eric shot a very solid 87 and took a 6 shot victory.  Douglas Christian continued to play well in the Jones Flight and took second place with a 93.

In the combined Snead/Sr Snead Flight, James Easley of Albuquerque also captured his first victory on the New Mexico Tour.   James started off the front nine very steady (47) and ended up with a solid round of 99 on this tough course.

Thanks to all of the NM Am Tour players and visitors for playing in the Red Hawk Open.
Note:  The TOUR returns to action with the Santa Ana Open on Sunday April 13.  Please contact me by email or phone before the registration deadline of April 6 for this event if you want to pay by cash or check.

Sandia Championship 2014 - Tournament Results

Sandia Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2014 season with the Sandia Championship at the Sandia Golf Club in Albuquerque  NM on Saturday, March 22.  The Sandia Championship proved again to be one of the most favorite events on the NM Tour.  The tournament featured the 4th largest field for a NM Am Tour event in the last five years.  In addition to New Mexico players, we had several visitors from the Colorado, Arizona, and Virginia tours.  The players had to handle cool breezy conditions but still much better than the conditions they played in last year. Excellent scores were posted in each flight and there were some first time winners and some repeat winners.
Second year tour Player, William Galbreth of Albuquerque captured his first Am Tour victory with an outstanding 74.  William played very well on both nines (37,37) and led the Championship flight with 3 birdies.   Alan Turney returned to action after missing the season opener with elbow surgery and also posted an excellent 76 to take second place.

In the combined Palmer/Sr Palmer Flight, tour veterans William Fortner of Farmington NM and Terry Freeze of Albuquerque, both posted strong rounds of 80.   William played steady golf, not making anything worse than bogey on both nines (40,40).   Terry started off very strong with a front nine 38, but faded on the back nine with a 42.  William took the 1st place prize when Terry was unable to compete in the playoff.

The combined Hogan/Sr Hogan flight was the largest flight in the tournament.  Second year tour player Aubrey Johnson of Albuquerque also broke through with his first Am Tour victory, an excellent 81.  Aubrey played an up and down front nine 42, but really played well on the back with a very solid 39.  Second and third places went to two of our Colorado visitors.  Tom Flores of Brighton CO posted an 84 for 2nd place, just edging out Chad Shubin (85) of Parker CO.

In the combined Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight, Phil Aragon of Santa Rosa NM, continued his winning ways taking his 2nd victory in a row.   Phil played steady golf and ended up with a strong round of 85.   One shot back was James Jefferies, returning to action this year with an 86.  Rounding out the top 3, Joseph Perez started off slow (48) and finished strong (41).

In the always competitive combined Jones/Sr Jones Flight,  Isaac Padilla of Flora Vista and Douglas (DJ) Christian of Albuquerque went at it again.  At the Southern New Mexico Challenge, DJ took the victory over Isaac.  This time Isaac came back after a slow front nine to take a 1 shot victory over DJ.  Isaac’s round of 88 was a roller coaster on the front nine (48) but he got his game under control and posted a excellent 40 on the back.  He just never gave up on what could have been a poor round.  DJ played strong on the front (43) but just faded a bit on the back nine.

Derek Freeman of Albuquerque, continued his strong play in the Snead flight, also taking his 2nd victory in a row.  Derek’s 86 was good for a 12 shot victory.  Derek shot an excellent 39 on the front nine and was able to play steady golf on the back nine to take the win.

Thanks to all of the NM Am Tour players and visitors for playing in the Sandia Championship.

2014 Southern New Mexico Challenge - Tournament Results

Southern New Mexico Challenge

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2014 season with the Southern New Mexico Challenge at the Sierra del Rio Golf Course in Truth or Consequences NM on Saturday, March 1.  New Mexico Am Tour players had to handle a cool and windy day, as Sierra del Rio proved again to be a tough challenge, with narrow fairways and fast greens. The back nine at Sierra del Rio was particularly challenging in the 25+ mph wind.  Three holes, the tight par 5 #10, the tricky par 4 #15, and the long par 4 #18, proved to be brutal as the field averaged more than 2 over par on each of these holes.  Needless to say, there were some real disasters on these holes.
Greg Allen of Pagosa Springs, CO, the 2013 NM Tour Champion in the Championship Flight, continued his strong play with an 80, by far the best round of the day.
First year tour player, Todd Caldwell of El Paso, TX captured the combined Palmer/Sr Palmer flight with a 91. Although Todd struggled on #10 and #18, he was able to control his game in the wind better than most other players.
Tour veteran Rick Blose of Albuquerque continues to pick up wins when the conditions are tough.  Rick posted a 94 and took a three shot victory over returning member Jack Anderson in the Hogan/Sr Hogan flight.
After missing a couple of seasons, Phil Aragon of Santa Rosa NM has returned to the Am Tour and posted a victory in his first time out.  Given the tough conditions, Phil shot an excellent 89 and took a 5 shot victory in the Sarazen/Sr Sarazen flight.  Joseph Perez started off well on the front nine, but struggled on the back nine to fade back to second place.
Tour veteran Doug Christian of Albuquerque captured the always competitive Jones/Sr Jones Flight with a solid 96.  Isaac Padilla could not quite catch Doug posting an 98.  Thomas Teschner took third place with a 99.
Second year player, Derek Freeman of Albuquerque, captured his first Am Tour victory with a 98 and a five shot win in the Snead Flight.  Derek started off slow on the front nine, but played one of the better back nines to pass 2nd place finisher James Easley.

Note:  The TOUR returns to action with the Sandia Championship on March 22.  Please contact me by email or phone before the registration deadline, if you want to pay by cash or check for this tournament.
