Sandia Championship - 2013

Sandia Championship

Albuquerque, NM—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of New Mexico continued its 2013 season with the Sandia Championship at the Sandia Golf Club in Albuquerque NM on Saturday, March 23. The tournament featured the largest field for a NM Am Tour event in at least the last 4 years. In addition to New Mexico players, we had several visitors from the Denver, Colorado and Phoenix, Arizona Tours. The players had to handle brutal conditions, with sunny but cold conditions and frigid 25–35 mph northwest winds with gusts over 50 mph. The back nine at Sandia was particularly challenging as the winds picked up and the dust began to blow. Scores were high as the tough conditions wrecked havoc with the players. The long par-5 11th hole played directly into the wind and proved to be the toughest hole on the course on Saturday.

Alan Turney of Albuquerque continued his strong play in the Championship Flight with an 86 and a four shot victory over Gregory Allen of Pagosa Springs, CO.

In the combined Palmer/Sr Palmer Flight, new tour member Robert Bauder of Sandia Park, NM posted the low round of the tournament with an outstanding 81 and captured his first tournament of the year after a strong 2nd place finish in our previous tournament at Sierra del Rio. Darren Webb of Albuquerque also played well in the cold and wind and posted a strong 84 for 2nd place. New member William Galbreth of Albuquerque rounded out the strong Palmer/Sr Palmer Flight with an 86 for third place.

Ken Stopka of Rio Rancho, NM continued to be the person to beat in the Hogan Flight and captured his third victory of the year. Ken started off strong, posting a 41 on the front nine, faded some on the back nine with a 46 (87), but still managed a 4 shot victory. Tour veteran Ajna Seret, of Santa Fe, took second place with a 91. Rocco Intriere and Adrian Abreu both posted 93s. Rocco won the third place prize by scorecard playoff.

In the Senior Hogan Flight, Rick Blose of Albuquerque, took 1st place with a 91 and one shot victory over visiting Royce Hanson of Littleton CO.

In the combined Sarazen/Sr Sarazen Flight, tour veteran Brett Burrell of Albuquerque, and Lance Lackas of Los Alamos NM both posted 88. Brett was one of the few players to score better on the back nine, posting a very strong 40. Lance posted a pair of 44s for his steady round. Brett took the 1st place prize and his second win of the year by scorecard playoff since neither player chose to go back out in the cold and wind.

In the always competitive combined Jones/Sr Jones Flight, Douglas Christian of Albuquerque captured his second win of the year. His round avoided the really big numbers that plagued most players and he parred the tough 11th hole. Douglas finished with a 95 and a two shot victory over Jeff Brown of Taos, NM.

John Mangan of Albuquerque, continued his strong play in the combined Snead/Sr Snead flight. John posted a steady 98 in the toughest conditions of the day to take his second win of the year.

Thanks to all of the NM Am Tour players and visitors for playing in the Sandia Championship and enduring the really challenging conditions.

Note: The TOUR returns to action with the Arroyo del Oso Championship on April 13. Please contact me by email or phone before the registration deadline of April 7, if you want to pay by cash or check for this tournament.
